COVID-19 Questions

How is One In Christ monitoring the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19)?

One In Christ Inc. (OIC) is closely monitoring the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19), especially at a state and local level. We are committed to doing the right thing for our volunteers, our attendees, and our partners during this time. Our hearts go out to everyone who have been affected by this virus, and we are grateful for the healthcare workers and our priests who are working tirelessly in attending to the sick.

What recommendations does One In Christ adhere to concerning COVID-19 pandemic?

We are continuously monitoring the impact of coronavirus and strive to adhere to the recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Indiana State Department of Health, and the governor’s Back on Track Indiana plan.

We also are following the guidelines of the Archbishop of Indianapolis and the parish pastors and their staff for the use of their facilities. For our part and to the best of our ability, we will continue to take the necessary and required steps to ensure that our seminar environment, attendees, and volunteers are safe and healthy.

Please, for the sake of everyone else coming to the seminar, stay home if you are sick.

General Questions

Why should we go through the One In Christ marriage preparation program?

Engaged couples that have already completed the One In Christ program have shared with us that after completing the program it helped them become closer to God and each other.  They shared that they now understand the truth, beauty and good of a Catholic marriage.

Think of all the preparation you have done for your career or job.  Most of us spend years studying or learning.  Think of the preparation taken for your wedding day.  Most people spend months planning and many dollars preparing for their wedding.  But how much time and effort do we spend preparing for what we hope will last 50 or 60 years - our marriage?

Ask yourself this question, "Am I willing to dedicate some time to hearing ideas, personal experiences, and learning skills that will help to make my marriage the best it can be?"

What happens at a One In Christ seminar?

Part One of the seminar consists of a series of presentations over a main weekend and a follow up Saturday. Led by a team of married Catholic couples and a priest, the two of you are encouraged to talk and pray privately with each other after each presentation.

An atmosphere is created for the two of you to concentrate exclusively on each other, free of the distractions, pressures and interruptions of daily living – a “time out” away from home, friends, and wedding preparations. It is a thought provoking seminar, specifically designed to give you the opportunity to talk honestly and intensively about your future together – an opportunity to discover a deeper appreciation of your relationship and God’s call to unite in a permanent union, the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Through personal sharing, the members of the facilitating married couples talk about what the Sacrament of Matrimony means to them individually and the impact a great Christian marriage can have on the world. Our goal is not just to present information on marriage, but rather to help couples see the what, why and how of the Church’s teaching in relation to marriage. That is why we begin with the basic catechesis on the Catholic Faith and interweave it throughout the seminar. Couples find their faith reinvigorated by learning the Church's teachings in the context of marriage preparation.

Part Two of the seminar consists of in depth classes where you will continue the journey by learning about the natural signs that God has placed in a woman’s body to detect fertility during her cycle which is called Natural Family Planning (NFP). Science has learned of God’s natural method which is easy to learn. NFP has been proven to be 99% effective in determining fertility for deeper communication on achieving or postponing pregnancy.

How many sessions are there for the One In Christ?

The One In Christ marriage preparation program consists of two parts. Part One consists of three separate days. In keeping with Church Teaching and the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops on “Married Love and the Gift of Life” the Part Two Requirement consists of Natural Family Planning (NFP) classes that the engaged couple will need to typically schedule to begin after the completion of Part One Requirement. These classes will be located at a different location and will depend on the approved NFP provider that the engaged couple chooses based on the couples needs and schedule.

Is it required to attend the entire One In Christ?

YES. It is very important that you attend and participate in the entire seminar (both Part One and Part Two). The seminar is designed for couples to build upon their knowledge through each presentation. By the end of the seminar, couples have the education and tools they need to help them prepare for a successful marriage.

Along with your priest who will be marrying you, the One In Christ Board of Directors, Administrators, and Facilitators take your marriage preparation very seriously. Once you fully participate and attend Parts One and Two of the seminar, the One In Christ Administrators will send a Certificate of Completion to the priest or deacon who is marrying you.

What if we can't attend the back to back weekends for the Part One Seminar?

Please contact us to discuss options and how we need to handle proper registration.  While all three days are required and must be taken in sequence, some engaged couples have attended the first Saturday and/or Sunday and then come back to finish the seminar by attending the Sunday and/or follow-up Saturday in a future One In Christ session.

For example, an engaged couple would register for a January seminar and attend the first Saturday and Sunday of the January seminar.  Then return to attend the follow up Saturday in the March seminar to complete the Part One Requirement.

How soon before our wedding should we attend?

Sign up as soon as possible as the seminar is designed to inspire ongoing discussion and reflection for both of you as you continue to prepare for marriage.

Because preparing for your marriage is so important, you should register for a seminar which is held no later than nine months before your wedding. For example, if your wedding is in July, you should attend the seminar in October, at the latest.

Try not to take the Part One seminar right before your wedding just in case something comes up, i.e. sickness, death in the family, etc. Part One Seminars are presented every few months, so its good to schedule an earlier one so you can fall back on a later one.

Does One In Christ satisfy the Catholic Church's requirement for marriage preparation?

Within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, One In Christ is endorsed as fulfilling this requirement. This program is also frequently accepted in other Dioceses and states. Whether in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis or elsewhere, your priest always has the final say on what he will accept for your marriage preparation. Please check with the priest who will officiate your wedding before registering.

At the conclusion of you attending and completing the work for Part One and Part Two of the One In Christ program, we will send a Certificate of Completion to the priest or deacon preparing you for marriage.  We will put you in copy of this email so you have a copy of the Certificate of Completion as well.

Do the teaching couples (facilitators) swear on Oath to the Fidelity to the Magisterium?

Yes, all our trained One In Christ facilitators who present the Catholic Church's teaching on Marriage and the Family swear an Oath to the Fidelity to the Magisterium.

Do I have to be Catholic?

No. One In Christ Seminar is a marriage preparation program for couples asking to be married in the Catholic Church. It will provide an excellent opportunity for you and your fiancé to understand the truth, good, and beauty of a Catholic Christian Marriage. One In Christ does present God as a focus for a successful Christian marriage. While the weekend will be presented in a Catholic expression of the Christian faith, the seminar is open to couples of mixed faiths.

What if we are civilly married?

After you meet with your priest and he schedules your wedding, you are welcome to attend the One In Christ seminar as you prepare for your sacramental marriage within the Church.

Are you able to accommodate my ADA disability?

If you may require an accommodation to participate in a One in Christ seminar, please contact us as soon as possible with the details of the request and we will do our best.
